“Safety flooring” is one of the most misunderstood terms in the trade. Here's what it actually means, where you genuinely need it, and how to specify it without overpaying.
What makes a floor a safety floor?
Safety flooring is sheet vinyl with slip-resistant particles (often aluminium oxide or silicon carbide) embedded through the wear layer — not just a textured surface that wears smooth. That's the key distinction: the slip resistance is sustained for the life of the product, which is what the standards require.
Understanding slip ratings
In the UK you'll mainly see two systems. The pendulum test (PTV) is the HSE's preferred measure — a PTV of 36 or above is classed as low slip risk. You'll also see German ramp-test ratings: R9–R13 for shod feet, and A/B/C for barefoot areas. As a working guide: general commercial wet areas are usually specified at R10–R11 / PTV 36+, commercial kitchens R11–R12, and pool surrounds or shower areas need barefoot-rated product.
Where it's required
Commercial kitchens, care homes and hospitals, communal bathrooms and wet rooms, and many workplaces where floors get contaminated with water, grease or dust. Employers and care providers have duties under health and safety law to manage slip risk — the flooring specification is usually the single biggest control.
Fitting matters as much as product
Safety flooring is only compliant when it's installed properly: welded seams, coved skirtings in wet or hygienic areas, and correct subfloor preparation so there are no hollows where water pools.
